"Une soeur" or "A Sister" is a Belgian French-language live action short film that premiered back in 2018 and was nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards almost 1.5 years later. The director is Delphine Girard, apparently still a relatively young filmmaker, and her effort here makes me curious about what we can expect from her once she makes the transition to full feature films. I got to watch all the five nominated live action short films last night before the Oscar ceremony and this one here was the first they showed and also my favorite from the bunch. At approximately 17 minutes, it as also the shortest from the nominees I believe, but the outcome here is a perfect example of how quantity does not equal quality because the other four are inferior, some even drastically. Shame this one probably never really had a chance to take home the prize. But that does not make it worse or anything. When and after watching, I still thought it was merely good, but after thinking a bit about it, I'd say it is even great and one of the finest short movies from its year and also deserving of the Oscar win. This partially has to do with lead actress Veerle Baetens here, who plays an emergency phone hotline operator. I already thought she was amazing on "The Broken Cicle Breakdown" wow... can't believe this one is already almost a decade old. so I recognized her immediately. This film reminded me of a Danish film from not too long ago that was also fairly close to being nominated for an Oscar, but that was a full feature film, so there were plot twwists and everything. This one here is just very focused and essential story-telling that almost feels a bit like a documentary from a police investigation. Fittingly, I read an article not too long ago about a case where a woman called such a hotline to report a case of domestic violence I think and that she (or somebody close to her) is in danger, but she could not speak freely, so she disguised her call as if she was calling to order a pizza. The hotline operator understood and realized it is not a prank and managed to help her to become hero of the day.
This film is at least slightly similar to that but it as made way before the event I just mentioned (became public) so it did not inspire this film. I think the moment you realize what's going on, namely when you find out that the hotline operator just received the call you saw before that from the perspective of the woman in the car, you are immediately in the middle of this film. And you won't leave until it is over. It is that good and had me on the edge of my seat more than most full feature movies. Of course, you will need subtitles unless you are fluent in French, but this should not keep you from watching. It is really essential that you understand all the dialogues. I also liked how they elaborated on what happened before that, probably that the woman was abused sexually and then abducted. You would not know how it ends, if there is a big car chase scene, the guy loses it and maybe kills his victim and/or himself or whatever else could happen, but Girard took the most likely and most realistic way out without any spectacular final sequence. Or I should say any spectacular showy sequence because the moment the police stops them, he gets out of the car and surrenders. Felt very authentic and realistic. So did everything else about the end, for example how she asks the woman on the phone if she is supposed to step out of the vehicle now as well. She trusted her to make the right decision for her the way she did before that by basically saving her. And at the very end, when Baetens' character asked for her name, we find out how anonymous this job really is and how you have to deliver acts that are much bigger than a simple "hello my name is. and still it stays a really lonely profession. The attention to detail in this film is nice too. Just one example how she steps away from the noise at her workplace when she is about to talk to the guy. She definitely is a pro knowing what needed to be done to do her best to save a life. There is no guarantee of course. Early on, there is also a brief moment of comedy when we find out about a guy who has been constantly calling for nothing that warrants calling. And finally, I would like to say that I think the title is a good choice as well. Very simple, but hits the nail right on the head. She is her sister that night, not only because of how she has to pretend she is, but also because the two women have a special connection. In the truest sense of the word. I highly recommend this film. Very well done.

Where do I begin... the movie is amazing, full of emotions, writing is on point, acting is on point. Everything about it impressed me a lot. It made me cry and laugh and after a few days of watching I'm still amazed by it. It has many Georgian elements which was very good and smart. And finally, I have to say how important it is for everyone and especially young people who might be ashamed of who they truly are. It has this amazing message of not being ashamed and embracing the real you. Thanks to everyone who made it possible for this masterpiece to come to life. 10/10 indeed.

R eal-life dancer Levan Gelbakhiani is Mehrab, a redhead with round, watchful eyes training as part of the National Georgian Ensemble in Tbilisi. It’s in his blood – his delinquent older brother David (Giorgi Tsereteli) is a dancer too, as were his parents and ageing grandmother. A macho discipline that comprises forceful military moves and elaborate, athletic leaps, the tradition of Georgian dancing contains “no room for weakness” and certainly “no sex”, according to Mehrab’s teacher. Enter new student Irakli (Bachi Valishvili), tall, dark and handsome with a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step that knocks Mehrab sideways. Swedish writer-director Levan Atkin’s heady third feature is attuned to the way desire has a tendency to throw everyday mundanities into sharp relief.
Mehrab is indifferent when dance partner Mary (Ana Javakishvili) falls asleep on his shoulder, but when it’s Irakli, he’s silently elated. Most of the boys’ increasingly charged interactions play out in the studio before the sun has risen, and after hours, over a lamp’s orange glow; cinematographer Lisabi Fridell bathes their blooming attraction in syrupy amber light. A street lamp illuminates a private show and turns it gold, as Mehrab dances shirtless for Irakli to Robyn’s seductive track Honey. This awakening eventually leads him to one of Tbilisi’s underground gay clubs. Gelbakhiani is commanding in his first acting role, metabolising heartbreak and moving with an irrepressible prowling sensuality.
In ultra-conservative Georgia, desire between two men remains strictly taboo. And so longing throbs like a sickness in small, unacknowledged gestures like the careful folding of a would-be lover’s T-shirt or a juicy, bleeding pomegranate (recalling, perhaps, Call Me By Your Name ’s peach). Luca Guadagnino’s queer romance might seem like a reference point, but that film’s swanky Italian villa is a world away from Mehrab’s, with his precarious restaurant job and out-of-credit mobile phone. Here, the stakes are higher, and so the romance sweeter.

Film na téma, které je v mnoha zemích stál velkým tabu, a to včetně Gruzie. Hlavnímu aktérovi bych uvěřila cokoliv. Občas na mě ale šla z filmu určitá prázdnota a taky deprese jakési gruzínské bezvýchodnosti. Na jednu stranu hrdost na svou kulturu a její tradice a na druhou žádná vize lepšího života ve vlastní zemi, i za to filmu přidávám tu pátou hvězdu. Jen chci pevně věřit, že Gruzie svou cestu najde. Ráda na tu zemi vzpomínám a byla bych ráda, kdyby si Gruzíni uvědomili, že vlastním pokladem je vlastní kultura, a to včetně akceptování těch, kteří by ji rádi (re)prezentovali, ač třeba jinak sexuálně orientovaní. Jeden z mála filmů, o kterým jsem dlouho věděl, chtěl jsem ho vidět, ale nebylo kde. Tak až letošní Mezipatra. Šel jsem na to bez očekávání a - líbilo se mi to hodně. Trochu asi taky pomohlo, že Gruzii mám tuze rád a film ji zachytil (včetně jídla! ) pro mě výborně. Neotřelý téma, báječně zahraný (Levan Gelbakhiani!! ), skvěle natočený (viz ten dlouhej záběr na svatební párty, jak kamera prochází místnostmi a přitom zabírá Meraba... nebo to rozednívání po jiný oslavě, kde Merab tančí v paruce pro Irakliho, na krásně zakomponovanou pecku Honey od Robyn, jó, to jsem měl úplně husí kůži! ). A ten soundtrack! Jako jo, někdo může lamentovat, že scénář se nevyhne pár klišé, některý postavy jsou takový prkenný, ale tenhle film o tomhle tématu a v týhle zemi, to je potřeba hodnotit trochu z větší šířky. Je úžasný, že takovej film vzniknul, i když to neměl lehký (a nemá to lehký, hodně mě mrzí ty násilnosti kolem premiéry filmu v Tbilisi a Batumi v těchto dnech... ). A pokud Levan Akin říká, že film začal dělat v reakci na (násilně rozprášenou) první pride v Tbilisi v roce 2013, tak klobouk dolu a držím jim palce. PS: Přesto všechno mě to úplně nalákalo, abych se tam zas vypravil! (10. 2019)

Je k tomu asi potřeba znát kulturní souvislosti, ale nic to nemění na tom, že Dokud se tančí je strhující dílo, které z hlavy jen tak nevyprchá. Navíc oba hlavní představitelé tu tvoří fantastický pár plný neotřelé chemie. Takové filmy jsou potřeba, zvláště v zemích, kde homofobie je součástí tzv. kulturní tradice. (11. 2019)

[8] The film also won the Grand Prix, decided by the audience, as well as the Best Film and Best Actor awards, decided by the international jury, at the 10th Odesa International Film Festival in July 2019. [16] Later that day several hundred members of Georgian March attempted to break the police cordon and forcibly enter the building of Amirani Cinema, but were stopped by the police. He couldnt possibly understand the endurance test she undergoes at work, which is why it makes complete sense that Bernadine may have had an affair with her deputy warden, Thomas ( Richard Gunn. The film deftly hints at this without ever making anything explicit, wisely relying on Woodards phenomenal ability to convey what cannot be articulated. Watching how she informs Thomas, “Im having dinner with Jonathan, ” followed by a little smile and shrug, tells us everything we need to know about their characters past history together. Its clear that Bernadine desires to reclaim her wholeness, returning to the bliss she once had with her husband, but as she recoils from his touch, we realize that her soul remains locked in the prison even during her off-hours. “I am alone, and nobody can fix it, ” she explains to Jonathan before switching on the television, opting to blot out a surrounding reality ill-equipped to deal with her own. This is a trait she shares with Anthony (the brilliant Aldis Hodge, who recently played another innocent man wrongly accused in “ Brian Banks ”) a prisoner on death row perpetually perched on pins and needles while awaiting the governor to grant him clemency, a verdict that could potentially arrive just minutes prior to his scheduled execution. To maintain his sanity, Anthony embraces optimism at every turn, covering the walls of his cell with paintings of birds that embody the freedom he believes just might be within his grasp, while calling to mind such classics as “ To Kill a Mockingbird ” and “Birdman of Alcatraz. ” He talks over his estranged ex, Evette ( Danielle Brooks, in a shattering appearance) hushing her with assurances of forgiveness until she refuses to be silenced, explaining that she isnt sorry for keeping her distance in order to protect their son. Whereas Evette chose a life of “barely existing”—her own self-imposed imprisonment—she notes that Anthonys name will live on for generations. Though “Clemency” is ostensibly a work of fiction, its story was inspired by the 2011 execution of Troy Davis, a black man convicted of killing a police officer in Georgia, a charge that has been repeatedly disputed, considering there is enough evidence to cast significant doubt on his alleged guilt. Instead of following the formula of a procedural, Chukwu finds artfully subtle ways of feeding us information, such as when Anthonys lawyer, Marty ( Richard Schiff) is heard over Bernadines car radio, listing the various gaping holes in the case against his client. For much of the picture, Bernadine hovers amidst the proceedings like the Spectre of Death, treating Anthony with a grim formality when all he wants is a hand to hold. The unanswerable questions she directs toward him, such as what food hed like for his last meal or which family members would be willing to claim his body, render Anthony owl-eyed and utterly speechless. Only when making his final statement—a haunting speech modeled after the transcript of Davis last words—does he indirectly address Bernadine by praying, “For those about to take my life, may God have mercy on your souls. ” What follows is one of the most harrowing death scenes ever put on film, and what makes it extraordinary is the fact that we experience it solely through the expressions of Bernadine. As Marty tells Anthony during their final moments together, all any of us ever want to is to be seen and heard, and the crowds of protestors lining up daily to loudly condemn his clients fate provide undeniable proof that news of the injustice has spread throughout the world. Of course, this is little consolation for a prisoner forced to spend the majority of his days in silence and solitude, yet when Anthony is strapped to a crucifix-like chair and given his lethal injection, its as if his pain and anguish is injected directly into Bernadine. In a breathtaking three-minute shot on par with the finale of Céline Sciamma s “ Portrait of a Lady on Fire, ” the camera holds on Bernadines face as the primal horror of the procedure she has overseen for years finally sinks in, breaking through her hardened exterior until he flatlines, prompting her own body to go limp. For the first time, she finds herself at a loss for words, just as Anthony was during her feeble attempts at interaction. You can literally spot the moment when her soul appears to have left her body. Thats how Alfre Woodards performance in “Clemency” feels as she violently sweeps you up with the force of her talent. It takes a while before you grasp how deep shes gone. As Bernadine Williams, a warden at a mens prison, Woodard enters with a stealthy lack of showiness. Shes playing the very model of a dispassionate overlord whether Bernadine is managing employees or asking a death-row inmate about his last meal, giving everyone the same exacting courtesy even if that semblance of composure has started to quietly crumble. The fissures arent fully visible when you first meet Bernadine, whose every word, gesture and expression seems to have been carefully calibrated to meet the unusual demands of her profession. Everything in her world is in its place, every hair has been managed, every response, too. At work, she sits at an orderly desk that looks too large for her, a wall of putty-colored filing cabinets looming behind her. Each cabinet holds untold numbers of documents that together form a monument of tragedy, a compendium of death and destruction, lost lives and grim pain. Working in a near hush that dovetails with the muted palette, the writer-director Chinonye Chukwu creates a persuasive, controlled, methodically coherent world for Bernadine. Shes at ease floating in her bubble of apparent calm, seemingly content to go with the flow as she relaxes at home with her husband (Wendell Pierce) or downs a drink or two at a bar. This pervasive tranquillity is strengthened by the harmonizing production design and cinematography that — with little clutter and deep shadows — give the different locations a similar look and vibe. Over time, scene by scene, these spaces blur together, locking Bernadine in claustrophobic sameness. She begins falling apart when an inmates execution by lethal injection is botched, an unspeakable, frenzied calamity that plays out under Bernadines close supervision. The bungled execution rattles the prison, but Bernadine initially seems more concerned with the investigation that it generates. Yet even as she briskly gets back to business, a near-imperceptible change seems to have occurred, affecting her like a slight drop in the barometric pressure. She has trouble sleeping, which doesnt seem unusual. But as she goes through the motions, she also seems increasingly detached from everyone and everything in her life, including her fretful husband. Chukwu escalates the stakes and deepens the drama with another prisoner, Anthony Woods (Aldis Hodge) a death-row inmate making his last appeal. Chukwus writing can sometimes be too on the nose, spelling out the already obvious, but for the most part she doesnt over-explain Anthony, whose despairing resignation and profound isolation Hodge fills in with a discreetly shutdown physicality and a gaze turned inward. Its an achingly moving performance thats shrewdly balanced by a small, heart-heavy turn from Richard Schiff as Anthonys lawyer, an anti-death row activist whose sagging affect suggests that hes spent a lifetime fighting a losing battle. As the clock on Anthonys most recent appeal runs out, Chukwu deepens the connections between warden and prisoner, putting the characters into play even when theyre apart. Both Bernadine and Anthony are captives of their worlds, legally, spiritually, morally. This sounds more simplistic and schematic than what plays out onscreen, where the vividness of the main performances tends to mitigate the scripted sins. Chukwu further complicates the story with a few other lesser characters, including some angry, grieving relatives and Anthonys old girlfriend (a very fine Danielle Brooks) who makes an unexpected if predictably disruptive appearance. Woodards performance gathers its astonishing force incrementally, in subtle choices and inflections that you might not even register as actorly decisions. When Bernadine first patrols the prison, you see a woman supremely in control, a professional whose casual authority informs her every gesture and whose absolute power has relaxed her posture, determined the rhythm of her gait, put an easy swing in her arms. That same power is what finally undoes Bernadine, a tragic figure whom Woodard brilliantly dismantles piece by ravaged piece, tearing apart a false front — and the larger institution this woman faithfully upheld — with unapologetic ferocity.
